White Lunar

****
White Lunaris a compilation of Nick Cave and fellow Grinderman Warren Ellis's five-year collaboration as film composers. As well as extracts from the award-winning
The Propositionand
The Assassination of Jesse Jamesby the Coward Robert Ford, it features cuts from the upcoming
The Road(John Hillcoat's film of Cormac McCarthy's novel) and previously unreleased scores to the documentaries,
The English Surgeonand
The Girls of Phnom Penh.
The first disc charts the evolution of Cave and Ellis's increasingly brooding neo-romanticism, at once lyrical and epic, which haunts the westerns The Propositionand Jesse James. The second highlights their quietly experimental approach to factual films, which emphasises spare drones, angular electronica and monochromatic colours. Both prospective and retrospective, White Lunar captures perfectly Cave and Ellis's ongoing work. www.mute.com
