Fans of Yeasayer, Caribou or Of Montreal may have already come across Ahmed Gallab, the Sudanese multi-instrumentalist who has drummed with those outfits. As Sinkane, Gallab can follow his own star and, going on Mars, it’s a voyage worth tagging along for. Naturally, you’ll hear elements of the indie/electronica he plies elsewhere, but the warm, full-bodied dub, funk, disco and Afro influences to the grooves provide some earworm-worthy moments.
Both Runnin' and Jeepers Creepers are masterful works of modern boogie, all swirling guitar lines and chunky bass. While Gallab relies hugely on the grooves to do the heavy lifting, there's enough evidence here of someone keen to sharpen his songwriting blade in the future. An album to leave you aglow by the time it draws to a close.
