The Drums
Let's Go Surfing
Twenty Seven Records
“Oh mama, I wanna go surfing/Oh mama, I don’t care about nuthin’.” The purpose of the The Drums’ mission, apparently, is to capture the boundless possibility of being a child on the brink of summer, with all the fear and excitement that comes with that. On those terms they succeed spectacularly. Why they’ve chosen to release this in October is anybody’s guess.
Vampire Weekend
Horchata
“In December drinking horchata/I’d look psychotic in a balaclava.” Well, at least Vampire Weekend realise what season is now almost upon us. Alas, this band are also so imbued with the spirit of summer, they could record Frosty the Snowman and it’d sound like a Jimmy Buffett number. Totally tropical.
Wallis Bird
When we kissed the world fell in love
This single from the Wexford singer-songwriter (left) has the energy, if not quite the artistry, of a Celtic-tinged Florence and the Machine. FYI Wallis: when you kissed, the world actually just felt uncomfortable and wished you’d take it outside, but we were too polite to say anything.
Charlotte Gainsbourg
IRM
Because Music
If you caught her in Lars von Trier’s Antichrist, you mightn’t think this possible, but Gainsbourg’s experimental collaboration with Beck really does present a side of the French chanteuse the public hasn’t seen before. www.charlottegainsbourg.com
Conor Furlong
Dubliner Conor Furlong arranged, produced and performed this in his tiny home studio. You suspect that, when he closed his eyes, he was standing on the edge of a cliff with the wind gently tousling his hair. It’s that kind of track. www.my space. com/conorfurlong
The Golden Age of Video
Hilarious pop culture mash- up that, in time-honoured fashion, becomes less hilarious with each repeated listen. www.youtube.com
