ARCTIC MONKEYS
That's Where You're WrongDomino ****
The first single from their new album, a Dada-esque Oasis parody called Don't Sit Down Cos I've Moved Your Chair, was a dud. The second, Brick by Brick, was more like a bad joke. But this is much better from Arctic Monkeys. On Suck It and See's final track, Nick O'Malley and Matt Helders conjure up some Stone Roses drum and bass magic, while a pretty girl blows tambourine kisses at Alex Turner. A blistering finale.
HENRIETTA GAME
Sleep Then ***
Henrietta Game are an Irish alt.folk harmony group in the Julie Feeney/Tycho Brahie mould. They'll be performing songs from their forthcoming debut album, Black Ship Ahead,at the Flat Lake Festival in Monaghan this weekend.
SHARON SHANNON ft IMELDA MAY
Go, Tell The Devil ***
Of course, the Flat Lake Festival isn’t the main event this bank holiday weekend. WestFest in Aghamore, Co Mayo boasts so many of the same performers who came out to welcome the American president last week (Imelda May, Sharon Shannon, The Coronas and Ryan Sheridan among them) that the Obama visit could almost be considered a dress rehearsal. Let’s just hope Enda Kenny is otherwise engaged this time around.
‘CHERYL COLE’ VS RUN DMC
Talk This Way **
Finally, if losing two TV jobs in one week wasn’t bad enough for Cheryl Cole, she now finds herself the target of an (admittedly toothless) lampooning from actress Jenny Bede. If Ant and Dec, Bobby Robson and Jimmy Nail all talk this way, Bede asks, why can’t our Cheryl? Auf Wiedersehen, pet! youtube.com
PATRICK WOLF
House Hideout ****
Proving that jolliness and melodrama can peacefully coexist, Patrick Wolf sings of a happy home where conkers fall in the yard and Capuchin monkeys nibble at his haircut. His fifth album, Lupercalia, is released on June 20th.
