Hold on to Your Misery
Moshi Moshi ****
Based on the title alone, this could be mistaken for a maudlin cover version from the dim recesses of the Smiths/Morrissey back catalogue. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hold on to Your Miseryis an upbeat foot-stomper that might just earn Anita Blay some overdue mainstream recognition.
THE NATIONAL
Conversation 16
4AD ****
The third video from The National's High Violetalbum casts The Daily Show's Kristen Schaal as a flighty US president and Mad Men's John Slattery as her lovelorn secret-service agent. There is a convoluted plot involving a sinister Russian leader and some sexy presidential bikini briefs. Bong hits all round, guys.
DEAD CAT BOUNCE
Rugby **
This latest comic offering from Republic of Tellyis based on the "hilarious" premise that all rugby players are closet homosexuals. The Rubberbandits can afford to rest on their laurels a little longer, I'm afraid.
THE RIOT TAPES
Photograph ***
The debut single from Dublin rockers The Riot Tapes is so radio-friendly one can almost hear those traffic updates fading in over the closing bars.
REBECCA BLACK
Friday Ark Music Factory **
"In this era of internet ridicule," frets Entertainment Weekly, "are we really a culture that shares the music video of an aspiring teenage singer just to mock it?" The answer from the internet, needless to say, has been a resounding yes. Imagine a tween pop anthem written by Dustin Hoffman's character from Rain Man. Throw in a starlet who pronounces the title "fried egg" and a hilariously incongruous cameo by a rapper who looks at least 35. The result? YouTube gold.
BOB DYLAN
Friday ****
Credit where it’s due. In his version of the same song, a pitch-perfect Bob Dylan impersonator does manage to imbue couplets such as “Tomorrow is Saturday/ Sunday comes after that” with a certain gravitas absent from the original. youtube.com
