EOIN BUTLER's guide to downloads, singles and free audiostreams
CARLY RAE JEPSON
The Kiss, Interscope **
She’s already scored the pop hit of the year with Call Me Maybe. Now Carly Rae Jepson returns with a follow-up new single jam-packed with weird compliments (“Your lips are undeniable”) and worrying medical diagnoses (“Your heart is unreliable”). Two-hit- wonder status may be just within her sights.
FIDLAR
Cheap Beer, Wichita/Mom & Pop ***
“I drink! Cheap beer! So what! Fuck you!” scream LA rockers Fidlar (repeatedly) on this blazingly straightforward party anthem, which makes Queens of the Stone Age’s Feel Good Hit of the Summer sound like an old Cole Porter number.
RORY THE ISLAND
Jimmy’s Winning Matches ***
This ode to Donegal football manager Jimmy McGuinness has notched up almost 400,000 YouTube hits. The back-story is equally remarkable. Originally titled Jimmy’s Selling Watches, it was composed by Rory Gallagher (formerly of The Revs, now entertaining in Irish bars in Lanzarote) in honour of a Senegalese trader who sells “the best fake Rolexes on the island”. Senegal Jimmy stars here but, due to visa problems, won’t be turning
up in Croke Park on Sunday. As a long-suffering Mayo supporter, I’m hoping the same is the case for the Donegal team.
ALUNAGEORGE
Your Drums, Your Love, Island ****
Directed by Henry Scholfield, the video for AlunaGeorge’s major label debut single is set in an art gallery where the most interesting exhibits are the people who come to visit. Aluna Francis and George Reid will perform in Dublin on September 27th.
RONAN KEATING
Fires, Polydor *
In his latest insipid offering, Ronan promises variously never to leave you, to fight the world on your behalf, and to be the light that guides you home each night. Well, be warned, woman-he’s-singing-about: people fond of making such grandiose vows usually draw the line at passing the remote or occasinally washing the dishes.
