FLORENCE & THE MACHINE
No Light, No Light
Universal Republic**
“It’s easy to sing it to a crowd/ But it’s harder, my love, to say it to you out loud.” Like most of Florence’s recent singles, this bombastic effort sounds as though it was intended to be enjoyed not on an iPod or CD player but rather sitting in Row 198 in the local EnormoDome. (I do like the boys dressed as priests in the video – it’s like a Catholic Bugsy Malone!)
THE CORONAS
Addicted to Progress
3u Records **
Magazines sometimes talk about “the most famous band you’ve never heard of”. The Coronas claim an equally peculiar distinction. They are the most popular band that no one you know really likes. Danny O’Reilly co have sold out six nights at the Olympia next month. How to account for this? I dunno; possibly a Jim’ll Fix It segment gone way out of hand.
JUSTIN BIEBER & JADEN SMITH
Thinking About You***
On which young Justin Bieber attempts to stick his head above the teen idol parapet. To be fair, he could hardly have chosen a better track to cover than this silky smooth offering from Odd Future’s Frank Ocean. But he might have been a little rash inviting 13-year-old Jaden Smith to contribute the sexy rap part. Seriously, that’s just wrong. youtube.com
LETHAL DIALECT
Keep It Real ****
Shot in Blanchardstown, Ballymun, Cabra and Finglas, with cameos by Irish rappers Street Literature, this is one of the most accomplished Irish hip-hop productions to date. It’s taken from Dialect’s forthcoming LD50 Part II album.
REBECCA FERGUSON
Nothing’s Real But Love
Syco ***
One rather overexcited UK critic has suggested that this single catapults the former X Factorstarlet into the same artistic league as Aretha Franklin or Nina Simone. It's a competent debut single, but let's not get carried away.
