Robert Glasper isn't the first jazzer to hook up with a bunch of hip-hop and r'n'b singers. But the Texas-born pianist brings enough things to the party to make Black Radio– his collaborations with Erykah Badu, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Meshell Ndegeocello and others – a delight. Aside from an empathy for where his guests are coming from, Glasper arrives with a killer rhythm section in drummer Chris Dave and bassist Derrick Hodge, who ensure the material has robust, spry foundations. The ensemble soon blast off for new terrain: tracks such as the Badu- anchored Afro Bluecarry much heft, with celestial jazz, a rocksteady backbeat and the singer's spiritual soul lilt perfectly pitched.
