Mr Bookshop Self-released**
Polly Barrett is a young singer- songwriter who began her career busking on the streets of her native Cork city. There are shades of Kate Rusby in Barrett's warm, slightly husky vocals as she meanders through these 11 songs of young love, break-ups, reflection and sadness. The emotions are raw but quite young in tone and attitude. There is also a sameness to the material, both in content and pace, that weighs heavily by the close, not helped by the monotone of the skeleton production of guitar, banjo and voice. The more mature songs (
Sunday's Well, Time Machineand the gentle whimsy of the title track) are promising, but Barrett needs to find a more dynamic and colourful range. Incidentally, the cover image of her as a glamorous lounge lizard in a bookshop is bizarrely at odds with the bedsit music. See myspace. com/pollybarrett
