Gimme Some,Cooking Vinyl ***
Even after you resign yourself to the increasing likelihood that Writer's Block was a career- high anomaly for Peter Bjorn and John, there is still lots to enjoy on the Swedes' sixth album. Returning to their pop roots after their more recent left-field releases, Gimme Somebenefits from the production skills of Per Sunding (notably the first time the band haven't self-produced). It's Sunding's assured touches that knock some shape into an otherwise scattershot batch of songs. Eyes and Breaker, Breaker buzz with a giddy energy that belies their modest ambitions, while Second Chance proves that a cowbell never fails to shift a song up a gear. Take Peter Morén's throwaway lyrics and the sugar-coated melodies at face value and you've still got an album that adds up to a whole lot of fun. And isn't that what good pop music should be?
