Extra WowWarp

The work of a Portland guitarist and drummer with assistance from a battery of electronic loops, Extra Wowsounds far larger than the sum of its parts. For the most part, Jason Buehler and Mark Shirazi simply let their bespoke, robust grooves and textures sweep all before them. Clearly students of the Krautrock game, the duo are, however, smart enough not to be curtailed by any stylistic parameters and also take cues from some of noise-pop's cadets for fuzzy wig-outs such as It's Here.

But Nice Nice are at their most commendable when they finesse their electronic ebbs and flows into majestic, showstopping grooves such as See Waves. While Extra Wowmay seek to be all things to all ears – and is usually cohesive enough to do that successfully – it's clear that Nice Nice's real sonic breakthrough will come with further distilling, drilling and defining.
