Undiscovered Country

Bassist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Horner has strong Irish links, and his skilful amalgam of jazz and world music reflects, inter alia, an occasional Irish accent. Yet, though the cultural emphasis varies, the music has a buoyant, natural flow. And despite his nonet's League Of Nations personnel – with Andy Irvine guesting on two tracks – it's a formidably together band, with fine soloists, particularly Rob Thomas (violin), Erwin Vann (tenor), and Colter Harper and Augustin Foly (guitars). More often associated with New York jazz's cutting edge, Horner here creates simple, singing, accessibly folky lines and imaginatively uses the group's instrumental colours. They're delivered by an ensemble, driven by himself and drummer Allison Miller, that can groove with euphoric authority, notably on Paradise Touch, Low Lifeand I Like It Because I Like It.
