This Is Happening
DFA/EMI ****
At this stage, we know what's on the menu at LCD Soundystem's house, which is probably why James Murphy is seeking to put the kibosh on the name once this album and tour are out of the way. Yet such familiarity doesn't breed contempt when the results are as punchy, punky, sardonic and smart as this. If all third albums presented fare as enticing as the wry observations on Drunk Girls, the industry whinge on Hit("you wanted a hit? But maybe we don't do hits"), the sonic thrills slattered all over Dance Yrself Clean, the dizzy disco canter of Pow Wowand the stately angst on All I Want,we'd all be happy with our lot. Throughout, Murphy keeps his eye on the distant horizon, the majestic, uncompromising depth on show an indication that he's already thinking about what comes next. Murphy may turn off the soundsystem, but that's not the end of this story. See lcdsoundsystem.com
