Ethiopia Super Krar
Riverboat/World Music Network
****
Ethiopia's krar harp is reputed to be descended from the Hebrew lyre of King David. Here, in amplified form, its ringing, funky tone is the centrepiece of this London-based trio's compelling debut album. Beginning their career as minstrels for social occasions within London's Ethiopian community, the Collective have been receiving growing recognition further afield, and recently represented Ethiopia in the Cultural Olympiad festivities. Krar mainman Temesgen Zeleke shares vocals with magnetic performer Genet Assefa, whose dancing and costume changes (depicting the tribal traditions of her country) are an integral part of the live show. Robel Taye's muscular kebero drums propel a spare, but dynamic, driving sound, which places its traditional roots firmly on the dance floor. Do the Super Krar!
