Aside from displaying a remarkable nous for getting the right remixers, such as Ramadanman and Hudson Mohawke to enhance his sound, Jamie Woon’s other big attribute has been his tremendous, soulful, spacey voice, which may remind some of Lewis Taylor.

What’s clear from this debut is that the son of folk singer Mae McKenna also has a classicist’s touch when it comes to songwriting. Woon may have found himself ducking and diving in the dubstep department, but these tunes are robust and sturdy enough to stand up without any future-bass trimmings.

While Night Airand Lady Luckare the calling cards, Woon also throws intriguing shapes on the slow-motion drift of Spiritsand Shoulda, tunes where the backing is more Sweetback than Burial. A deft, accomplished debut from someone who appears willing to take the time to fine-tune his talent.
