Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan

This unlikely pairing's third collaborative effort (produced, written and arranged by Campbell herself) centres primarily on whiskey-ravaged Americana, throwing in guest appearances from folk troubadour Willy Mason on two tracks, one of them a Townes Van Zandt cover. Still, for all its sultry instrumentation and breathy/growling vocal spars, there's a sense that Hawkis a little too predictable in places. It's almost as if Lanegan and Campbell have mislaid the chemistry that made their previous endeavours so intense. The slinky Sinatra/Hazlewood throwback Come Undone, the sinister rock 'n' roll rasp of Get Behind Me, and the brawling force of the instrumental title track are of a undoubted high quality, but perhaps the duo need some new inspiration to make their next alliance a truly essential one.
