The Second Three Years Xtra Mile Recordings***

With four solo albums and EPs already under his belt, former Million Dead singer Frank Turner's transformation from hardcore vocalist to credible folk artist is both comprehensive and convincing. His second rarities compilation is so thorough that it should really only interest die-hards, yet the variation keeps attention kindled. Original tracks, live sessions, traditional folk tunes and modern covers of Nirvana, NOFX, Take That and even Kilkenny's Kerbdog make for interesting bedfellows. Yet the patchwork nature of this collection works when gathered under Turner's powerful voice, astute translations and clever turn of phrase. Recommended listening for the unversed is the Winchester man's last studio album, England Keep My Bones, but this fills in the gaps nicely as well. See frank-turner.com
