North Hyperdub ****
It was probably inevitable that more dubstep producers would want to go beyond merely tweaking bassbins for the dancefloor. Darkstar's James Young and Aiden Whalley were already setting their controls for a different post-dubstep dimension. Having brought singer James Buttery and his fragile wisp of a voice into the fold, they've produced an absorbing album, which is by turns elegant, sombre and melancholic. The beautifully rendered atmospherics and slow-motion drama of their sounds will grab your attention, as the trio set moods that are twinkling (the wonderful sweep of beeps on
Aidy's Girl
Is a Computer), haunting (
2 Chords) and eerie (
Under One Roof). It's also the first album from the bass side to include The Human League – a downbeat version of
You Remind Me of Goldis a fantastic recasting of the League's electro-pop credentials. See myspace.com/ hyperdub
