Wild Go Melodic * * *
Dark Dark Dark’s second album of stately chamber-pop is a soundtrack in search of a bohemian cabaret. As before, all the components are in place for maximum drama: a femme fatale frontwoman in Nona Marie Invie, plump musical stuffing, and flurries of cello, accordion and banjo to add atmospherics. You could argue that there’s an absence of songs with hooks to hang your hat on, but that’s not the way of the walk in DDD’s world. Instead producer Tom Herbers and the band concentrate on embellishing each track with wistful, moody intent. The restraint is commendable, since it would be easy to utilise the collective musical arsenal to overwork each track. Instead the ensemble hold back. The star of the show again is Invie, whose has both voice and poise. See brightbrightbright.com
