Butterby Hudson Mohawke Warp **** : It's fascinating how a bandwagon manages to acquire so many passengers so quickly. At the start of 2009, you could apply the "wonky" tag to the work of a handful of producers. These were dudes who were producing raw, experimental hip-hop beats that sounded woozy and wonky, hence the name.
Within months, you couldn’t move for wonky releases that came from the deep and dubby side of the instrumental hip-hop tracks. The shark had well and truly jumped.
Naturally, the leaders of the pack, such as Hudson Mohawke, scuttled away from the carnage as quickly as their legs would carry them. Scottish youth Ross Birchard is HudMo, a producer who has built a shining rep on the back of a huge volume of releases ( Oops and the Polyfolk Dancemini-album from earlier this year are the ones to check out) and collaborations ( Heralds of Changesaw him going beat-to-beat with Dubliner Mike Slott).
His debut album proper is a majestic beast. While his peers are still wandering around trying to emulate the late, great J Dilla or go large by adding some dubstep, the music that HudMo is hearing in his head is beaming straight from the 23rd century.
His booming bass thumpers, thunderous drums and supersized electronic grooves are shepherded in and out of tracks with the sweetest of touches.
The highlights reel from
Butter is a lengthy one. There are Dam-Funk and HudMo banging their heads together for the liquid lash of Tell Me What You Want From Me, the cackle between the notes as Gluetoothtwists back and forth, Rising 5's mesmeric jacking momentum and the splintered abstract, angelic ambient emotions of Star Crackout. Be sure to spread this full-fat Butter right out to the edges. www.myspace.com/ hudsonmo
