Oversteps Warp * * *
What's most commendable about veteran Warp act Autechre is their dedication to the experimental cause. There are many electronic music producers who will happily follow a formula until a new one is put in front of them, but Autechre have always set a different pace. After the edgy, challenging dimensions of 2008's
Quaristicecollection, the new album sees Rob Brown and Sean Booth shifting gears and moving again towards the ambient constructions that were once their domain. However, as this is an Autechre album, there's still some grit amidst the wonderfully applied textures, making this an album with a fascinating tonal momentum. Treale is the highlight, a track with the kind of powerful emotional spike that Autechre have often shied away from assembling before. But Treale does not exist in splendid isolation:
