Altan With The RTÉ Concert Orchestra

25th Anniversary Celebration Claddagh Records

The traditional and classical have had a rich history, from the lateral thinking of Seán Ó Riada to the contemporary visceral excavations of the West Ocean String Quartet. Altan celebrate 25by revisiting their extensive repertoire in the company of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, conducted by David Brophy, with mostly compelling results. Daithí Sproule's The Rosevilleglistens in the heat of its orchestral setting, its intricacies buffed by Fiachra Trench's sympathetic arrangements. Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh's voice shimmers, too, in the earthy settings of Dónal agus Mórag, and A Tune for Frankieeffortlessly retains its raw fiddle contours while embracing its newly minted, evocative orchestral treatment. Occasionally the arrangements veer uncomfortably close to easy listening ( Cití na gCumann), but this is a set piece that reflects richly on Altan's appetite for constant evolution. See altan.ie
