In a week heavy with auctions, Mealy's is holding a two-day event on Tuesday and Wednesday in Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, offering more than 1,500 lots. There is a heavier emphasis on paintings than usual with this company, and plenty of Irish art on offer from a wide variety of artists. A great many familiar names will be found in the catalogue, such as Gladys MacCabe, who is represented by a number of pictures, including a view of Dun Laoghaire's docks (estimate £700-£900), The Band in the Park (£600-£800) and The Winners' Enclosure (£1,500-£2,000).
Letitia Hamilton's scene of a market day in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, is expected to make £6,000-£8,000 and George Russell's Mucknish Mountain with Village in foreground has an estimate of £800-£1,200. A watercolour of a jester by Harry Kernoff carries an estimate of £600-£900 and James Le Jeune's Children on a Beach is priced at £3,000-£4,000. Beatrice Gleneavy's White Hand has an estimate of £3,000-£4,000 and Mildred Anne Butler's Two Figures on a Garden Path is expected to fetch £900-£1,200. Irish workmanship is also much in evidence among the selection of silver in this sale, such as an early 19th-century set of 19 crested, fiddle-patterned dessert spoons made in Dublin and a set of eight crested fiddle-patterned table spoons from the same period and city (both £200-£300 each). An Irish silver George III-style punch bowl (circa 1900) is expected to make £900-£1,500, a George IV pear-shaped silver crested coffee pot by James Le Bass of Dublin is expected to go under the hammer for £2,000-£3,000 and a late 18th-century Dublin silver cream jug may fetch £300-£400.
Furniture is also available at Mealy's, such as an Irish Georgian long-case clock, its arched brass dial stamped William Maddock of Waterford (£3,000-£5,000), and an English mahogany-cased regulator long-case clock (£2,500-£3,500). A serpentine-fronted carved and moulded mahogany hall table with later marble top carries an estimate of £2,800-£3,500, an ornate late 19th-century French marquetry and parquetry side cabinet has a price of £1,200-£1,600 and a French kingwood and gilt brass mounted bed is expected to fetch £5,000-£7,000. There are other French pieces, such as a 19th-century upright boulle piano made in Paris (£2,500-£3,500), a lady's cylinder bureau (£1,500-£1,700) and a late 19th-century rosewood and marquetry bonheur de jour (£1,500-£1,700).
