If the experience of hearing them back trumpeter Tomasz Stanko so superbly in the past is a guide ( not to mention their exceptional CDs for the ECM label), then the visit of Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski’s trio next week promises to be a memorable one. Though they have been together for a long time, Wasilewski, Slawomir Kurkiewicz (bass) and Michal Miskiewicz (drums), are not only still young, they are also evolving individually and as unit, retaining a freshness and a feeling of discovery that give their work a sense of constant renewal.
European jazz continues to produce remarkable pianists and piano trios, including that of the late Esbjorn Svensson and just about any trio led by John Taylor, but this is one of the best around.
