Having played one of Harvey Milk's lovers in Milk, James Franco will next portray gay poet Allen Ginsberg as a young man in Howl, which starts shooting next month.

Howlcentres on the obscenity trial taken against Ginsberg's infamous Beat Generation poem. The film, on which Milkdirector Gus Van Sant is executive producer, will incorporate animated sequences reimagining Ginsberg reciting the poem.
