Supplying the soundtrack for good times has always been the name of the game for Norman Jay (right). His CV is lengthy and illustrious, taking in co-founding both London’s Kiss FM station and the seminal Talkin’ Loud label, as well as numerous club nights (mention of High on Hope still sends a shiver of excitement down the back of some veterans), seminal warehouse parties and one-night stands.
These days Jay is best known for his annual shindigs at the Notting Hill Carnival, where he continues to serve up a bang-on mix of soul, funk, disco, reggae and house to thousands of happy revellers.
Jay became a Member of the British Empire in 2002, an award given for his services to music. If only Her Majesty’s policemen – who spent many, many nights in the 1980s trying to shut down Jay’s warehouse parties – knew what was to come.
