TY TALK:The boys and girls of Skerries Community College, Co Dublin: Shane Browne, Carolyn Croke, Ross Mulhall,  Laura Smith and Vincent Watson

On Kanye West’s stage invasion at the MTV Awards

Carolyn Croke: “If I didn’t like him before, now I won’t even pick up his CD. Taking over the stage as Taylor Swift stood there, and complaining that Beyoncé should have won, was really rotten.”

On photography

Vincent Watson: “We’re doing a really interesting digital photography course as part of Transition Year. They show us how to use the camera and then we’re sent to take our own photos in the local area.”

On a proposed incinerator for Naul

CC: “A horrible idea. It’s a beautiful, non-industrialised area and now they want to ‘improve’ it with toxic waste.”

On having no trains in Skerries

VW: “Since the collapse of the viaduct at Broadmeadow, there’s no trains to the city, so it takes a bit longer to get in. Also, the bus drivers are under a lot more pressure; it’s no wonder there’s been more accidents.”

On The Apprentice

Shane Browne: “The Irish version is just a cheap copy of the UK show. It’s time for some fresh concepts.”

On the school show

SB: “We put on a show every single year, and this time it’s Disney’s High School Musical. We’ve started preparing for it, and I’m playing one of the leads.”

On Meals on Wheels

Laura Smith: “Every few weeks, the TY students here will go down to the kitchens and deliver hot food to elderly people. I’m looking forward to starting this; it will be good to do community work.”

On Transition Year hoodies

Ross Mulhall: “There’s a tradition in this school that TY students get hoodies with our own message printed on the back, or our name or nickname. I’m Apollo Skydroid – it’s the name I use for electronic music.”

On a trip to Carlingford

LS: “Everyone’s looking forward to our trip to Carlingford Adventure Centre – abseiling, kayaking, and rock-climbing await.”
