MY TY WEEK:Edmund Gubbins of John the Baptist Community School, Hospital, Co Limerick

'A FEW WEEKS ago, my TY class organised a big road safety event. We organised a remembrance service for the victims of road accidents, and gave a presentation to the younger students. We're now hoping to create a drama about drug driving, which is recognised as a growing problem on the roads.

"We're also organising a musical version of Aladdin, which we'll stage in February. I sing and play an instrument, so I auditioned for the role of Aladdin. I'll hear back soon, but either way I'm looking forward to taking part.

"A project on disability and disability awareness has been an eye-opener. We've teamed up for pottery workshops with students from another school who have disabilities, and we're making good friends through this shared activity.

"One of the highlights so far, however, was a big 30 kilometre hike in Kenmare, Co Kerry. We all went it on as part of the Gaisce President's Award - I'm going for the Bronze medal - and it was great craic.

"I just love Transition Year. Before, I would have been reluctant to speak up or out in front of groups, but this has really boosted my confidence. I've made some loyal and trustworthy friends for life, and it's already introduced me to new ideas and ways of looking at the world."
