The crisis in Russia has stoked fears of a large-scale humanitarian crisis, relief agencies said yesterday.

Analysts said it was too early to predict what impact the sudden collapse of the rouble might have on Russia's ability to feed, clothe, house and heal itself.

But the 150 million people in the vast country, who have already experienced a dramatic decline in life expectancy in the 1990s, could be highly vulnerable if made suddenly poorer.
