Patrick Graham, whose large paintings are rarely seen these days in Dublin, has won plaudits from several West Coast art critics for his exhibition at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles, writes Brian Fallon. Peter Frank wrote in LA Weekly: "In Graham, Ireland finally has a painter-draughtsman to match its writers." And Marge Bulmer declared in the monthly magazine Art Scene: "Patrick Graham's superb draftsmanship and technical accomplishment communicate significant content."
American museums have also shown interest in the Irish artist. The Fresno Museum of Art will mount his present show in January, and it may travel later to Japan.
The Irish conceptualist, Dorothy Cross, has aroused less enthusiasm by her exhibition at the Angeles Gallery. David Page, reviewing it for the Los Angeles Times, wrote: "A lighter touch and just a bit of humour would guard Cross's art from its plodding obviousness." Incidentally, contrary to some reports Dorothy Cross was not the only Irish artist included in the L.A. International Invitational. The Angeles Gallery, which exhibited her work, simultaneously mounted a one-woman show by Kathy Prendergast.
