YOU'VE LIKELY heard that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2smashed into the record books with the highest grossing US opening weekend ever.
With takings of $169.2 million, the boy wizard trounced The Dark Knight'sprevious tally of $158.4 million and notched up a record-breaking $309 million in the rest of the world.
Unsurprisingly, Harry's biggest haul outside the US came from the territory comprising the UK, Ireland and Malta. But Irish muggles, where art thou? Screen averages for the entire, ahem, area, suggest takings of a remarkable €46,000 per screen. In the Republic of Ireland alone, HPDH2managed €1,548,203 from 64 locations.
But as any fool capable of performing instantaneous long division might tell you, those numbers mean that Ireland only hearts Harry Potter half as much as the British do. In fact we only loved Harry to the tune of €24,190 per site.
No matter. Harry's weekend tally still catapults the film straight into Ireland's top 10 grossing movies of 2011 thus far. More than halfway through the popcorn season, The Hangover Part 2and Bridesmaidsare currently Ireland's favourite 2011 releases with cumulative totals of €3,880,794 and €3,271,654, respectively.
Will Harry Potterultimately conjure enough to spoil Ireland's romance with bawdy wedding films?
