GIRL TALK Andrew’s Lane Theatre, Dublin Fri 10pm €14 01-6795720
Some musicians like to use samples in their work, but few go the whole hog like Pittsburgh's Greg Gillis. Fewer still then go on to use those 100-per-cent-sampled tracks to create anything as mad, daft and colourful as a Girl Talklive show.
A typical Gillis track will usually contain dozens of snatches of other tunes, yet stitched together in a way which is not just cohesive, but also downright funky. On recent albums such as Night Ripper and Feed the Animals(which featured over 300 samples in 50 minutes), Gillis has demonstrated a singular take on the art of sonic juxtapositioning. While you could spend hours analysing and dissecting the samples – and especially how Gillis's work plays in the whole area of artistic copyright – it's far better to just dive in and experience the Girl Talklive show. Support tonight from Spilly Walker (David Kitt's more beats-orientated project) and DJ PCP.
