There is beauty aplenty to be found in Obaro Ejimiwe's debut album as Ghostpoet. Released earlier this year on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label, Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jamfeatures Ejimiwe's hazy, languid drawl coming to the fore with tales of inner-city dread and doom over sharp, well-tuned and finely pitched murky beats. Cash & Carry Me Home, Floatingand Finished I Ain'tshow the MC's perfectly toned lyrical muscles and his ability to spring surprises on the listener.
Live, as seen at the Great Escape in Brighton recently, Ejimiwe is even better, embellishing and extending those tracks into lovely sonic cascades. Support from Irish hip-hop mainstay the mighty Mek. This show is part of the weekend-long LiveStyles festival, which also includes a showcase by young Cork hip-hop heads, a DFI MC battle and a big closing party at the Pav on Sunday.
