Oh boy! It's barely a week since we revisited DuckTales and now Mickey Mouse is back in an updated Castle of Illusion (1991). The new edition maintains the basic story and gameplay, and they've done a lovely job of updating its sound and appearance. Mickey's girlfriend Minnie has been kidnapped by envious Mizrabel, so he has to go to the Castle of Illusion to rescue her. This means travelling through its different rooms, each of which is a magical variation on familiar surroundings: plants come to life in the enchanted forest, menacing toy soldiers march in a possessed playroom and so on. It plays very well, mostly in 2D platform, and sometimes switching to third-person, and the animation is delightful. The only complaints are the short running time and sparse save points, so there is a little padding. Overall, Castle of Illusion is a sweet and refreshingly innocent use for your controller.
