The final award at last Sunday’s Bafta ceremony in London was the presentation of the academy’s fellowship to director Terry Gilliam, but they made a right mess of it.
Invited to pay tribute to Gilliam in a pre-filmed link, Jeff Bridges actually admitted asking someone else for pointers as to what to say about Gilliam and then read them out. Next came a compilation of clips from Gilliam’s movies, but it was so carelessly assembled that many of the same clips were shown twice.
Tagged on unannounced at the end of the show, while the lengthy credits were running, were four Bafta award presentations cut from the TV edit: best animated feature ( Wall-E), best short animation ( Wallace Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death), best short film ( September) and best editing ( Slumdog Millionaire).
