Elsewhere in today’s paper, you can read this writer’s thoughts on today’s Oscar nominations. But we were already drowning in awards nominations by the time yesterday’s announcement was made. Wednesday saw the unveiling of shortlists by both the British (Bafta) and Irish (Ifta) film academies.
To nobody’s great surprise, Lenny Abrahamson’s What Richard Did was all over the Iftas. The film picked up six nominations, including mentions for Abrahamson as director and Jack Reynor as best actor. Also nominated for best film were Good Vibrations, Grabbers, Shadow Dancer and Death of a Superhero. Love/Hate dominated the television awards.
There was also some Irish action at the Baftas. Kris Kelly’s Here to Fall and Eamonn O’Neill’s I’m Fine Thanks were both nominated for best short animation. We are, however, disappointed that – despite nominating the not-awfully-British Seven Psychopaths – Bafta failed to shortlist either Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers or Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio for best British film.
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, you say? Get up the yard.
