This week's news from the world of film
Light House still an indie beacon
Congratulations to the folk at Dublin’s Light House in Smithfield, which picked up an award for best independent cinema at the RAAM Management Cinema Awards in London this week. John Kelleher, this country’s outgoing Film Classification Officer, also received an industry achievement award.
His & Hers gets Sundance nod
Some belated Sundance news. Ken Wardrop's moving His & Hers– fast becoming the Irish film to see this year – has been granted the World Cinema Cinematography Award: Documentary at the Utah event. Check out the ceremony on YouTube and enjoy producer Michael Lavelle's joyous acceptance speech. His & Herswill play at the 2010 Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.
Corrections where they’re due
A few corrections are due the folk behind the fine new Irish film Eamon.Last week, we suggested that Paki Smith was behind the camera on the film. Smith, is, of course, the art director. The talented David Grennan was the cinematographer. Also, we should have noted that Miriam Ingram collaborated with Colin J Morris on the impressive score. If you want to catch Margaret Corkery's film, it will, from today, be expanding beyond the IFI to a number of cinemas throughout the country.
Their gongs are in the right place
You'll get no serious arguments (well not many, anyway) from Reel News as regards the winners of the Evening StandardBritish film awards. Andy Serkis got the best actor gong for his barnstorming turn as Ian Dury in the thrilling biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Rolland Anne-Marie Duff won best actress for playing John Lennon's mum (what is it with all these music flicks?) in Sam Taylor-Wood's Nowhere Boy. Best film went to Andrea Arnold's Fish Tankand – making up for its disgraceful exclusion from even the Oscar long-list – Anvil! The Story of Anvilsecured best documentary.
Brad and Angie take on the
World
Allow us to clarify that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt love one another very much and that there is no possibility whatsoever of them splitting up. Following a report to the contrary in News of the World, the couple have pointed their lawyers towards News International. " News of the Worldhas failed to meet our clients' reasonable demands for a retraction and apology for these false and intrusive allegations, which have now been widely republished by mainstream news outlets," the couple's brief declared.
It is worth noting that TMZ.com, the site that broke Michael Jackson’s death, denied the story instantly. You may not approve of TMZ, but it is beginning to look like an impressively reliable news source.
Sleek and funky new IFB website
The Irish Film Board has launched a new website that hopes to draw surfers in with a sleeker layout and funkier content. See www.thisisirishfilm.ie.

"And there was great rejoicing" – to quote the Pythons – among cinephiles in Cork with the news that some three months on from the closure of the Kino arthouse cinema, a new cineclub is opening in the city, writes Barry Roche.

The season kicks off with Jan Troell's Everlasting Momentsand closes on May 2nd with Michael Haneke's 2009 Cannes Palme d'Or winner The White Ribbon.www. halfmoontheatre.ie, 021-4270022
