Have you heard about this 50 Shades of Grey thing? No? Well return to your hermitage while the rest of us ponder the inevitable film version of EL James’s smutty bestseller. Universal has hired Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, producers of The Social Network, to bring all that humping and puffing to the screen.

“At its core, Fifty Shades of Grey is a complex love story, requiring a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the big screen,” Donna Langley, chair of Universal, commented. “Mike and Dana’s credits more than exemplify what we need in creative partners, and we’re glad to have them as part of our team.”

The film-makers have a real challenge on their “delicate and sophisticated” hands. Can mainstream audiences be drawn to movie erotica? It’s one thing to read the thing alone at home.
