LARGE collection of cranberry glass an some fine porcelain are among 250 lots to be sold under the hammer by west Cork auctioneer Matt O'Sullivan next Thursday, at Dunmore House Hotel in Clonakilty. The vast majority of the lots are being sold by Dr Alan Gallagher, formerly of Brittas Bay, Co Wicklow, who has retired to West Cork.
He and his late wife, a former antiques dealer, built up an extensive collection of good Victorian and Edwardian furniture, porcelain, including pieces of Crown Derby, Chelsea and Meissen figures, Coalport table ware and several toby jugs. There are several lots of silver and glass - over 30 lots of cranberry glass alone - and a large assortment of trinkets, including pill boxes and Victorian card cases.
There are no estimates on the catalogue and many of the items will be auctioned without reserves. "We will be selling everything on the day," said Geraldin O'Sullivan. "It will be a good opportunity for people who are starting to collect to buy something at a genuine price." A pretty Edwardian bowfronted display cabinet is likely to be among the most expensive lots. Geraldine O'Sullivan gives it a conservative estimate of £500-£700.
