A report headed "NIB identifies bogus non-resident accounts" in Monday's editions said the Committee of Public Accounts (CPA) initially had wanted the Comptroller and Auditor General to investigate AIB but it was understood that Mr Purcell had felt it more appropriate to inquire into all institutions.
The chairman of the CPA, Mr Jim Mitchell TD, has pointed out that this was not the case; that in fact the Committee believed it necessary to give the Comptroller the legal powers to examine the records of all financial institutions that he deemed appropriate for the purpose of providing facts to the CPA on the performance of the Revenue and the compliance of the institutions under the law.
