Celtic jazz is a description that does scant justice to Carmina’s idiosyncratic, layered sound. Rob King and Pippa Marland form Carmina’s back bone, and bring a subtle complexity to their playing (guitar and bodhrán, and sax and vocals respectively) and to their songwriting. Theirs is a music for the twilight hour, when the sun goes down and notes can breathe deep of the night air.

Their last CD, My Crescent City, was packed with originality as well as with spine-tingling interpretations of such classics as Lord Franklinand I Am Stretched On Your Grave. This is music that seeps deep into the bones, where more attention-seeking, attention-deficit-disordered bands don't dare go.

Their Irish tour concludes this week with a series of festival appearances. On it they are accompanied by the superb piper (and regular collaborator) Diarmaid Moynihan and the virtuoso saxophonist Julian Nicholas.
