Edward Coughlan's By Name and by Nature has an easy-going charm which does not detract from the occasionally sharp writing and witty observation.

The revue style adopted for this Mentl Productions presentation suits the casual venue; this very casualness tempts the young cast to discard any notion of projection. Although physically self-assured, they have no opportunity for visual cohesion, but their insouciance and the mobile face of Edward Coughlan himself as Jack, the ungifted and hapless actor, sustain the light handling of director Fiona Lawton.

By Name and Nature continues at the Half Moon until Saturday. To book phone 021 271168.
