Dublin musician Brian Mooney is to undertake an unusual tour during the month of October with his new project Beautiful Unit. Mooney, founder of Trust Me I’m A Thief Records – the home of Irish bands such as The Redneck Manifesto and Si Schroeder – will “explore the sonic possibilities of real-time sound manipulation using 8-bit sampling, repetitive grooves and live music.”
Instead of performing in bricks-and-mortar venues, however, the “New Sounds, Different Spaces” tour will see Mooney and his bandmate, producer Jimmy Eadie, play gigs in a variety of spaces, including barns, car-parks, livingrooms and mystery locations. Their music will be accompanied by visual art by Héctor Castells.
Speaking to The Ticket, Mooney expressed confidence that the tour, which was funded by the Music Network Performance and Touring Award, would be a success despite its haphazard nature. "These gigs have a more cultural element to them because, for the most part, they are one-off events, and are not taking place in a pub or drinking atmosphere," he explained.
He added that the response to their performances so far has been positive.
“Families brought their kids and one aimless drunk told us we were great, the best thing he’s heard since Buddy Holly,” he laughed. “I felt we brought a community together for a while. United in bemusement, perhaps.” See www.myspace.com/ theeerupeanson for tour dates.
