Bernadette Kiely’s earliest years were spent in houses overlooking the River Suir, first in Clonmel, then in Carrick- on-Suir, and proximity to rivers has been a constant in her life. Latterly she’s lived in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, on a bank of the River Nore. There’s no ignoring the river there as it changes with the seasons, the level of its waters rising – sometimes overflowing its banks – and falling.

About four years ago Kiely began to make work based just on the stretch of river directly adjacent to her home. Her subtle, richly atmospheric drawings and paintings “register the slow drift of daily and seasonal movement, change and the passage of time”. The Ballina Arts Centre, perched on a spectacular stretch of the River Moy, is an ideal venue for the exhibition.
