Al Murray, The Pub Landlord, National Stadium, Dublin, Sat 8pm, €26, 01-4533371
It was a trick pulled by Alf Garnett all those years ago: caricature a range of bigoted and xenophobic views in order to expose their core ridiculousness. Al Murray in his Pub Landord persona pretends that he is the voice of “common sense” in a confused new world order. The bar-room philosophies of the character – a working-class English nationalist – display his bewilderment at aspects of modern life. There are plenty of side-swipes at those who disagree with him .
Although he’s been doing this character for a long while now, the joke hasn’t aged. If anything, Murray is on better form now than he ever was. This is very well crafted satire from a gifted performer.
