Why? Have you been there before? Numerous times. It is the touchstone for renewing my spirit and energy after a long busy year. Corca Dhuibhhne in west Kerry for me, is a "holy place" and steeped in antiquity and tradition. The power of its beauty and serenity give a great healing and it acts as a source of constant inspiration. Plus it gives me a chance to enjoy the Irish music and practise my Gaeilge.

Travel companions? Sean, my husband and our cat, Dipsy.

Any special pre-holiday purchases? Books.

Who packs your bags? Me! The packing starts half an hour before we leave. It's normally total bedlam, chaos rules supreme! But we get there in the end, with everything except the kitchen sink. Although Sean would like to bring that too.

Three things you won't travel without? My diary (which should be left at home), my mobile phone (a very sore subject with my husband. I normally have to listen to my messages out of his earshot at the bottom of the garden). On a more serious note, I never forget to bring my walking shoes and shorts.

One thing you always forget? High factor sun-cream for Sean - he burns easily.

What books are you planning to take? Will you read them? I bring a stock of 10 books, all novels of an easy-reading style and, depending on the weather and the number of visitors we have, I will hopefully submerge myself in all of them. I won't take anything that relates to work and will use these novels to unwind and switch off.

Favourite aspect of holidays? Going for long walks. Not being on a schedule and not having to dress up and wear make-up. Being able to do something on a whim or just do nothing at all. Having time on my own with Sean. I also enjoy listening to Irish music and conversations with our neighbours agus an cupla focal.

Pet holiday hate? Having to be conscious of time.

What do you bring for emergencies? Lots of prepared frozen meals that I can pretend I've cooked myself, accompanied by favourite bottles of wine.

Your best holiday ever? Walking with a group of International Peace Makers through the French Alps to the United Nations in Geneva.

Your worst holiday ever? Getting badly sunburned in Florida in 1977.

Best thing about coming home? Welcoming sense of familiar neighbours and friends.

Worst thing about coming home? Having no escape from schedules, diaries and leaving my mobile phone switched on.
