A 42-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of a young mother of two found stabbed to death in a flat in Mallow in North Cork last week.
Joseph Butler of the Belfry, Bridewell Lane, Mallow was charged with the murder Paula Canty (31) at the Belfry, Bridewell Lane, Mallow on January 3rd.
Mr Butler, who is originally from Midleton in east Cork, was brought before Midleton District Court at 11am this morning where he was charged with the murder of Ms Canty.
Det Sgt Micheal O’Regan of Mallow Garda station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court that he arrested Mr Butler at Bowling Green, Mallow at 3.09am this morning.

He told the court that he charged Mr Butler with Ms Canty’s murder at 3.31am this morning and that Mr Butler made no reply to the charge when it was put to him after caution.
Mr Butler was arrested on Tuesday afternoon for questioning about the murder of Ms Canty who died from a stab wound to the upper body.
Gardaí had launched a murder investigation on Saturday after a postmortem examination by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster confirmed Ms Canty died as a result of foul play.
Meanwhile, funeral details have been announced for Ms Canty whose remains will lie in repose at Gabriel and O’Donovan’s Funeral Home, Kinsale on Friday from 5pm followed by prayers at 6pm.
Ms Canty will be buried at St Patrick’s Cemetery in Nohoval near Kinsale following requiem mass at 11am on Saturday at St John the Baptist Church in Kinsale.
A native of Kinsale in west Cork, Ms Canty is survived by her mother, Sinead, her daughters, Alyisha and Aoibhe and her siblings, Darragh, Donna, Latoya, David and Rianna.
