F+D: Carton House

Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel is giving one lucky Irish Times Food and Drink Club reader the chance to win a luxurious overnight stay for two people with breakfast, dinner in Kathleen’s Kitchen, and their newly launched Iconic Afternoon Tea.

A five star resort, Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel, is located just 30 minutes from Dublin in the County Kildare countryside. Set within 1,100 acres of private parkland, the resort is also home to two championship golf courses, luxury spa and wellness facilities, outdoor activities including cycling, tennis, walking trails, golfing and fishing, and is perfect for a break away with your friends, partner or family. We are offering you the chance to win a luxury overnight stay for two people sharing in one of their stunning guest rooms, including breakfast, dinner in Kathleen’s Kitchen, and their newly launched Iconic Afternoon Tea.

A story-telling tea with the option of a history tour of the resort before or afterwards, the Iconic Afternoon Tea at Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel, playfully pays tribute to a selection of the iconic guests who have stayed over the years. Served Thursday through to Sunday each week, the Iconic Afternoon Tea menu faithfully follows the traditional combination of sweet and savoury, but this fresh version includes delicacies specifically created to celebrate some of the icons who have also been guests at the beautiful resort. Queen Victoria stayed in the Chinese Boudoir, a bedroom specially decorated for her during her visits to Carton House in 1849 and 1897, and there is a classic Victoria sponge with fresh strawberry and cream filling on the Iconic Afternoon Tea menu in her honour.

Dame Julie Andrews lived in Carton House, Fairmont throughout the summer and autumn of 1969 while filming the movie Darling Lili, and the carrot cake on the menu is based on a Julie Andrews recipe. Julie was a fantastic baker as well as being an award winning actor and singer. Singer Lana Del Ray chose Carton House to experience her love of luxury and history in Ireland, and the apple sweet with a cinnamon infusion is named after a line in her song ‘Radio’ - “Now my life’s sweet like cinnamon.” Princess Grace of Monaco holidayed in Carton House for three weeks in 1963 with her husband Prince Ranier III and their children. There’s a darling little peanut butter ganache chocolate replica of the Hermès Kelly handbag on the Iconic Afternoon Tea menu as an homage to Grace Kelly’s timeless style. Mick Jagger visited Carton House, Fairmont often during the seven years that Marianne Faithful lived in Shell Cottage on the grounds. The “Ruby Tuesday Velvet Cake” is a nod to the famous Rolling Stones song “Ruby Tuesday”.

Finally, film director Stanley Kubrick spent a great deal of time at Carton House Fairmont while making two movies, the great Barry Lyndon in 1975 and The Big Red One in 1980. The orange chocolate cheesecake on the Iconic Afternoon Tea menu is of course inspired by Kubrick’s most famous film, A Clockwork Orange. Available Thursday to Sunday, in the rooms that originally would have entertained aristocratic visitors to Carton House, Fairmont. As you gaze up at the gilded ceiling of the Gold Salon, the exquisite coving of the Drawing Room, or out into the floral abundance of the Rose Garden beyond, these are the same views that have captivated visitors for almost 300 years.
