The site also surpassed all previous sporting events, Internet daily hit totals, when it reached 70 million hits on June 30th. To date, hits have been received from 170 countries, and products have been sold at its online store to fans from 53 countries. EDS developed the site in the role of official information-technology services provider to World Cup 1998.
The electronic store (store.france98.com), displayed in English and French, contains 400 World Cup items. The shopper selects items by placing them in a virtual "shopping cart". At check out, real-time currency conversions are calculated, along with global tax rates and custom charges, and the customer provides credit card details for authorisation and purchase. The merchandise is promised to be shipped to customers within five business days, and shoppers can track their shipments through an online link.
