Wall Street stocks bounced to new highs after an early wave of profit-taking knocked prices low enough to draw eager bargain hunters into the market. The Dow
Jones industrial average erased a 95-point slide en route to its third consecutive record high and first finish above 8,100.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a slim margin on the New York Stock
Exchange, with 1,388 up, 1,468 down and 569 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 571.02 million shares, against 617.02 million in the previous session.
The Standard and Poor's 500-stock list rose 3.77 to 940.33 and the NYSE
composite index rose 1.80 to 487.31, a record-high finish for both measures.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.65 to 1,569.30, and the American Stock
Exchange composite index rose 2.40 to 637.05.
